Another year has come and gone.
Work is still work.
I started an online journal this year.
I'm keeping it anonymous for now.
I plan on revealing it and myself as editor
if I get to issue #10. Issue #3
debuts in another month or two.

I had a few pieces published this year.
Just had a poem published in amphibi.us.
"The Morning Before The Flash Of Winter"
It's about soft acts of violence.
And nuclear war.
And the end of romance.

There is no Cookin' With The Pope this year.
I'll be cooking my signature gift
to reruns of How I Met Your Mother
and whatever else they put on Fox after Midnight.
Maybe some Sabaton/SYL/Overkill/ on the radio.

Speaking of Strapping Young Lad, I made a mock
book trailer a year or so ago. Uploaded it to YouTube,
but hid it under Private as WMG caught wind.
I offer it to you random passerbys as a gift.
I used to have a regular reader, but they
got a case of the snoots a year(s) ago.

The Thirteen Posts Of Christmas: #03: Movie Review: Home Alone (1990)

Home Alone (1990) is a good-natured family comedy from my childhood that still entertains twenty years later. It is the story of what happens to a young, obnoxious little boy, Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin), when he wishes he could just live alone. While rushing to board a plane to France, Kevin's parents inadvertently leave their son home alone, and the kid finds out first-hand that dreams sometimes come true. While fun at first, Kevin soon realizes that the world he wanted can turn nasty in a heartbeat.

Reality isn't the only antagonist in this new world. A pair of bumbling burglars, played wonderfully by Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci have their sights set on Kevin's house and the treasure trove of goods within. Much of the story revolves around a cat-and-mouse battle for survival as the criminals repeatedly attempt to rob the house.

As a kid, I would have to say I found the Tom & Jerry aspects the most appealing. Watching it all come to a head in his little fun house of torture was everything it could be for a nine-year-old. I still remember getting the VHS and ripping it open to find the cheesy little blueprint of his madness. Fun stuff.

Watching it now, I think it is the human connections that get to me the most. The old man and his son, Kevin's mother (played to beautifully by Catherine O'Hara) going berserk trying to get home to her son, and the always great-and-mighty John Candy's comforting presence in the back of the Budget Rental van.

Home Alone strikes many mature themes throughout, focusing on maturity, security, and judging others. It teaches us to face our fears, even at the risk of failure. It states that loneliness is no substitute for happiness.

Chris Columbus directs a John Hughes script with a fairly heavy twinkle that makes the film a must-see during the Christmas season. Hughes was a genius at blending comedy with a serious tone and it comes through masterfully here.

One thing I noticed this year that I hadn't seen previously is a certain weakness of relationship between father McCallister (John Heard) and his son. Keep an eye on the reunion scene, as it seems he could really give a damn that his son is okay. A slight hug, a well-wish, then--? Sort of interesting, especially as it is coupled shortly by the reunion scene between the old man and his son next door. Maybe it is the foreshadow of a falling out to come.

Overall, Home Alone is a second-tier modern Christmas classic that can be shared yearly by any age group.

So, it is that time of year again. I'm typing this early, so I'm not sure if my Mississippi Mud is gonna turn out right, but I'm sure it has. This year's been full of ups and downs. A few publications here and there, and I did manage to find a job. But my production has slowed and I lost my best bud of seventeen years. Big Boy, the cheeto-eatin' namesake of the blog, passed away while I was off to Roanoke. He was so fucking awesome.

I'm not ready to shroud him in blue yet.

Anyway, 2010 is approaching. I've already got poetry lined up for a few places (one I've tried to get into a couple of times). I wish I had more to share with you, but I guess I'll repost what I thought was my best preposthumous piece, which no one saw:

Soon, once I get access to a cabal of high speed internets, I'm gonna upload two videos I made in the past year. A video for Strapping Young Lad's "Detox" and a trailer for my first poetry manuscript that I haven't even submitted to anyone yet. The latter video even includes lines that have already been revised before this last submission period.

When her company expands to the west coast, working mother Holly McClane makes a decision that ends up tearing her family apart. Chasing a promotion into the California wilds, with her children in tow, Holly leaves New York and her husband to the icy draft of her exit. Months pass. Directed by John McTiernan, who packs every second with the right blend of warmth and tension, the film plays every note to perfection, even the surprise ending (that really can't be explained rationally), and keeps the screen packed with all the elements that made Hollywood great.

While some may throw about the term "chick-flick" or just label it as just another Christmas movie, let it be known that it is so much more than that. Die Hard is the very definition of the Christmas spirit. It's about family coming together. It's about finding all the joy missing from life, and it comes neatly packaged in two hours of bliss.

The film reminds us of the good in the world. It reminds us of the strength it sometimes takes to get what we need most in life. It reminds us that in the end, through hard work and the right attitude, we may be victorious.

Die Hard is a must-see for the season.

Yule Crack Up!

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) tells the story of one man's attempt to have an old-fashioned happy family Christmas. A holiday classic, Vacation is an excellent comedy that should be in everyone's collection. It just seems it isn't Christmas without it.

Chevy Chase stars as Clark W. Griswold (reprising his role from the earlier vacation films), a Romantic at heart who will stop at nothing to get his family into the real meaning of Christmas spirit. But as his house quickly fills up between warring in-laws, his nitpicking children, an uninvited cousin-in-law (with family and RV in tow), animals going ape, and a year-end bonus check up in the air, he's finding out that the holiday is driving him insane.

'Tis The Season To Be Merry!

A far-ranging comedy, from the toilet to the heartstrings (it was written by the wonderful John Hughes), Christmas Vacation works on so many levels because we've all been there in spirit. Sure, our cousin-in-law may've never emptied his shitter into our storm drain, and maybe an asshole uncle has never burned down the Christmas tree, but it's all about nerves, and I bet anyone has had his balls (her toes) stepped on by a relative at some point in time.

And that's the point of this comedy or any good story when dealing with issues of an everyday nature. The normal frustrations of a family Christmas (finding the perfect tree, getting a sudden headache, not getting what we wanted or expected) is amplified to a Godly power of ten here. And it shows us the true spirit of the holiday season—namely that shit happens, so just suck it up and be thankful for having family and friends to be able to hold company with.

Chase plays his character well, moving in an almost manic fashion about the spectrum of sanity. His eyes outplay his words in many memorable moments, which are always an excellent indication of someone adding more than just breath behind a line of script. The big rant about his boss is awesome, especially the huffing call for Tylenol at the end of it.

Chase is supported here by a talented cast, which includes Beverly D'Angelo, Juliette Lewis, William Hickey, and Brian Doyle-Murray among others, and each helps the production get the most out of Hughes's script. Randy Quaid stands out as Cousin Eddie, a man described as having a bigger heart than brain. A likable character, Eddie's equipped with enough persona and peculiarities to have a script all his own ( not the abomination fourteen years later, mind you, but a Hughes script. Seriously, wtfwt?).

As far as comedy goes, most of the bits here hit solidly, with only a few odd or flat. The only real aspect of it I don't really care for is the whole grating Yuppie couple next door bits. Some of it's okay, but I guess it just feels kinda out of place.

A holiday movie with tons of laughs, a good heart, and some memorable moments, Christmas Vacation is a necessity for this time of year.

For its Era/Genre/Etc.: Awesome
Overall: Great.

Aside: I just fair used the hell out of Ms. Scorsese. Yowza!

Most of the posts this year will be new. One will definitely be old, since google took my hits away from it (for adding a "Christmas" tag to it (no less)). I figure it wouldn't hurt anyone's feelings. No one remembers 2007 anyway.

He was buried this morning.

I don't know when it's really gonna hit, but I was just getting something from the kitchen and after a minute I started waiting for him to approach from his little box and meow at me.

There was silence.

He would have been 17 this fall.

Life stinks sometimes, but I guess it is for the best. Something inside him was killing him (loss of hair, massive weight loss, etc.). I just hope the very end was painless.

He was a good friend, a good son, a great cat.

Sleep well, my cheeto-loving friend.

Spring Cleaning

Been working on a few things. Fatman O'Toole related. <-- The original poem is due sometime around September in issue #4 of motel58. --> Maybe a chapbook thing.

Been thinking about the collection and actually, seriously, truthfully, looking into piecing it together.

Already got two bites out of this latest batch in about a week. Thieves Jargon--one of my favorite poems will be there shortly along with another that I heavily revised this time (and made much better). The other at a place called Breadcrumb Scabs (yeah, so the name kinda sold me on submitting--).

My sister's dog isn't feeling well (and on my sister's birthday, too). It stinks.

Happy Birthday, Sis.

Big Boy's been struggling with what looks like diabetes and I hate seeing him that way.

It sucks.

Brighter side?

It's BASEBALL SEASON! Woohoo!

Royals will finish 79-83 and second in the division. It's easy to see parity where there is an abundance of mediocrity. That is the AL Central code. So, Go Royals!

So, anyway. Been thinking about checking in more often.

Maybe doing little capsule reviews.

"Baseball On The Sunrise Strip"

A poem I wrote last year, "Baseball on the Sunrise Strip" never left my hands. It was four stanzas, three of which sucked rocks, about a nightclub/baseball/bullshit metaphor. The one stanza was what I was going for, but the slosh to get there was not something I felt great about. I trimmed it up for this, changed some tense, pieced it into a tight six lines.

Searching for music, I settled on a tune by Mississippi John Hurt called Nobody's Dirty Business. Recorded in 1928, it falls under a public domain license. The subject matter of the song is very cold and interesting. Mixed with the subject matter of the poem, it doesn't immediately mesh well, but possibly adds an extra texture of what went sour in the "protagonist's" view. It may be used again and soon. Maybe like in the next month for one of my personal favorites of the dead poems.

The film footage is a public domain video of Army Nurses filmed in 1945 by the Armed Forces. Good stuff. I found it here: http://www.archive.org/index.php

"Cause For Panic"

This is an early poem. Something out of the era of the "crap book." Where I was 90% forced rhyme and etching my way through some darker (and more retarded) stuff. It's the end of the world poem! Woohoo!

Details: This song kicks ass. I forced the video longer than would normally would have liked, but if anything else you can now just rip off the song in its "entirety." The song is a variation on "Barbara Allen" by Hule "Queen" Hines. It was recorded in the 30s by the Library of Congress. I liked the way it abruptly ends (probably either damaged over the years or ran out of recording space on the platter. Still, it fit. It's in the Public Domain.

The footage is all in the Public Domain. The nuke was tested in 1955 in Nevada. The roach footage is from a short documentary called, "Goodbye, Mr. Roach." Both can be found at the internet archive. http://www.archive.org/index.php

"Gunfire in Richmond"

This is a Haiku I wrote last year precisely for a certain nameless publication. I got admonished because my haiku wasn't typical haiku and didn't fit a certain haiku standard of haiku-ness. Yeah, so, it has a f--king title. Boo, flackin', hoo. And it is my attempt to bring some 'Ku to the funk. Waaahh.

Thus, why I don't write for publication. I write, then seek its expansion.

Anyway, I think this is the best one yet. Quick and punchy and sweet. "The Best $40 Bucks" was awesome too, but ain't anybody watched it. Click on the "Prepost" link at the end and scroll down.

Details: Mark Holmberg kicks ass. He's like a grit-lit master of non-fiction journalism. The footage used is from a New Year's Eve story he did this past year for WTVR -Channel 6. The story is actually about a murder that took place, Jesus, fifteen years ago. Wasn't New Year's (and I don't think the baby lived) but it was the inspiration.

This is a poem I wrote as a one-off jot in the middle of the night two years ago as a part of a 30::30 exercise. Surprise, the two were fighting then too. A cinquain, it barely stands. As crappy photoshop/msn-art, it barely stands. Click the image to actually view it. I screwed up Israel's side by making it too richly in its royal blue. I like dark colors that don't transfer well. I saw this and didn't go back. The trade of rockets is embarrassing as well. I was gonna leave it as almost Morse Code dotting my little diagram, but got carried away. Weeee.
